Exploring Diverse Mediums: From Analog Film to AI-Generated Imagery
Portrait of Masimba Hwati
Cyanotype on handmade paper, hand-perforated, 2021
Photographed in front of the Gauforum at the parade ground in Weimar using a large-format analog camera.
I have created the series "Echoes of Oblivion" by merging classical inspiration with modern technology. In my creative process, I utilize Disco Diffusion, an advanced platform that employs artificial intelligence to transform written text into visual artworks. This platform integrates technologies like OpenAI's CLIP (Contrastive Language–Image Pre-training), which understands text and images within a shared embedding, and VQ-GAN (Vector Quantized Generative Adversarial Network), which facilitates the creation of high-resolution images.
This technology allows me to develop unique visual concepts that honor the past while portraying the unpredictability of the future. By training my own model in Disco Diffusion, I gain the freedom to explore specific aesthetic preferences and nuanced interpretations that would be unreachable through conventional media. The result, which I develop as a cyanotype, is not only a homage to the origins of photography but also an exploration of the interplay between old and new, light and shadow, memory and oblivion.
