ARTIST STATEMENT
Marcus Sternbauer, born in Sindelfingen, Germany in 1976, has been working with digital media and technologies for over 30 years. His artistic journey, rooted in interdisciplinarity, merges cutting-edge digital tools with traditional techniques, creating a body of work that transcends conventional boundaries. With a foundation in Media Art, specializing in Experimental Film and Generative Art from the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Sternbauer's work embodies a profound ethos where technique, aesthetics, and technology intersect.
Sternbauer incorporates a wide range of advanced technologies, including machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR), to explore new frontiers in creative expression. He has also experimented with generative adversarial networks such as StyleGAN and has minted several of his digital works as NFTs for virtual worlds. These technological tools not only extend the possibilities of artistic creation but also raise critical questions about the role of AI in relation to human creativity and imagination.
At the same time, Sternbauer blends these digital tools with classical art forms such as painting, printmaking, sculpture, video, sound, and text. His work spans multiple mediums, forming a dialogue between the digital and the analog, the futuristic and the timeless. In addition to these visual techniques, sound has become a crucial element of his practice, reflecting his involvement in the experimental noise and sound research band, Nepenthe. Through this collaboration, Sternbauer explores the limits of sound as both an artistic and emotional medium, using noise and experimental audio to challenge perceptions of order, chaos, and silence.
Sternbauer’s art is not merely a technical display; it delves into the depths of human existence, exploring themes that touch upon the numinous and enigmatic aspects of our being. His compositions are often a meditation on the human psyche, revealing the hidden abysses of our inner world. Yet, despite the complexity of his themes, his work maintains a minimalist elegance that underscores his deep commitment to both technique and aesthetics. Each piece is a masterful balance of form and substance, offering viewers a visual and sensory experience that invites deep exploration.
In keeping with the Bauhaus tradition of open-ended artistic exploration, Sternbauer’s works do not impose fixed meanings or narratives. Instead, they invite viewers to engage, to form personal connections, and to interpret the pieces in ways that are unique to their own experiences. It is this dialogue between the artwork and the observer that reveals the true essence of his work. The beauty of Sternbauer's art lies not only in its technical sophistication or aesthetic appeal but in the personal journey each viewer embarks upon, uncovering layers of meaning and significance within the intricate tapestry of his creations.
