"Algorithmic Portraits" uses a trained Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to reproduce artistic human portraits based on a custom dataset.
The work comprises 101 digital portraits created using a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN). The GAN comprises two neural networks (agents) that strive to enhance each other's performance. Both were trained on a single dataset. I completed this work in 2017 when entities like Midjourney & Co. did not exist.
One agent creates content similar to the dataset, and the other matches it against the original dataset. If it recognizes it as a forgery, this forces the forger agent to improve its content - until it looks like it belongs to the training dataset.
